☺️ Gentle🐾 Friendly

Journey is a young, large female Newfoundland mix with a striking black long coat. She is currently in Lacon, IL. Journey is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. She is not yet house trained and truly appreciates the companionship of other dogs. This girl needs a home that can offer her both patience and a sense of security as she learns that people can be trustworthy.

About Journey

Journey has figured out something most people never do: she prefers dogs to humans. After people failed her, Journey got dumped in the middle of winter alongside two other dogs. Rescuers and community volunteers worked together to bring her to safety before the brutal cold set in—a process that involved days of tracking, traps that didn't work, and some strategic teamwork on a freezing night. She’s learning to decompress but still carries a lot of caution around new people. Journey thrives with canine companions and looks for reassurance from other dogs, no matter their size or gender. She needs a stable, patient adopter and absolutely requires a confident, low-key dog already in the home who can serve as her role model. Humans will have to earn her trust over time—she doesn’t hand it out easily. She’s a flight risk, so a securely fenced (ideally privacy-fenced) yard and close supervision are non-negotiable. No homes with young children who might leave doors open. Journey isn’t going to greet you with a wag the day she arrives, but if you give her time and space, she’ll learn that people can be safe too. Her story even has a silver lining: the last of the three dogs rescued from her abandonment was also found and given a fresh start. Journey is hoping for her own fresh start—maybe with you. • How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?

A Newfoundland mix like Journey appreciates a good amount of secure outdoor space. A fenced yard is a must for her due to her flight risk and need for exercise.

  • Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?

Generally, Newfoundland mixes are known for being gentle, but in Journey's case, she should not be placed with young children. Her tendency to bolt means she needs a careful environment where doors aren’t left open.
