About Maka

EMERGENCY PLACEMENT DEADLINE CLOSE OF BUSINESS Sunday April 26, 2026 AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION ONLY THROUGH PACC Name: Maka Animal ID: A894281 Age: 2 years Weight: 37.8 lbs Web Link: 24petconnect.com/PimaAdoptablePets/Details/PIMA/A894281 About: A Journey of Resilience Maka’s road has not been easy. She arrived at PACC in February after being surrendered for her own safety. Tragically, she was pregnant at the time and lost her litter. After everything she has been through—from the loss of her puppies to moving between foster homes—Maka is more than ready for a stable, loving environment where she can finally exhale. Despite her tough start, Maka is a total sweetheart with people. She is the definition of a velcro dog who just wants to be near you. She will happily crawl right into your lap to give you kisses. She takes treats with a very soft mouth. While she isn't always vocal about needing to go out, she does great on a routine. Maka is a work in progress, and she needs a family that views her as a diamond in the rough. Because of her history, she has a few specific requirements: Maka must be the only pet in the home for now. She has shown significant reactivity toward other dogs and recently had an altercation in a playgroup. She needs a home where she doesn't have to worry about sharing her space or her humans. Maka experience separation anxiety when left alone. Her first foster home found success with crate training, which helped her settle and kept her from being destructive. She will need a family patient enough to continue this routine. Maka is reactive to other dogs on walks. She isn’t a candidate for dog parks or high-traffic areas, and she’ll need a dedicated handler willing to work with a trainer on leash management and reactivity. Maka has a minor bite on her record that occurred during a high-arousal moment while slipping a harness. Her new owners should be comfortable with positive reinforcement handling and building a bond of trust. Maka is looking for a final forever home. She needs a family that understands that her past doesn't define her, but it does mean she needs a little extra guidance. If you are looking for a loyal, affectionate companion and are willing to put in the training time, Maka will reward you with a lifetime of lap snuggles and devotion. Available for adoption only through PACC. Interested parties: Must visit PACC before the COB Sunday April 26, 2026 deadline to meet with a counselor who will review notes and introduce you to the dog to ensure that it’s a good fit. Some dogs may also require an introduction to any dogs they may potentially live with. Home Management Plan No Other Dogs: • Maka is not suitable for a home with other dogs. • Reason: reactive to other dogs while on leash or barriers, started altercation that resulted in a latch on • Management: They should be the only dog in the household. Avoid dog parks, group walks, or introductions to unfamiliar dogs to maintain safety and reduce stress. • Behaviors could improve with proper management and/or professional training. Separation Anxiety: • Maka may experience stress or anxiety when left alone, which can result in vocalization, pacing, or destructive behaviors. • Crate Training: Proper crate training can provide a safe space and help prevent destructive behaviors when unsupervised. • Enrichment & Comfort: Provide mental stimulation through frozen kongs, puzzle toys, or other enrichment items. Background noise, such as calming music or television, can also help reduce stress. • Gradual Independence: Practice short departures and slowly increase alone time to build their comfort level. Destructive Behaviors: • Maka may engage in destructive behaviors such as chewing, digging or shredding items - often due to boredom, anxiety, or lack of stimulation. • Crate Training: Proper crate training can help prevent destruction when unsupervised and provide a safe, calming space for them. • Enrichment & Stimulation: Many dogs become destructive when under-stimulated. Offer daily mental and physical activities such as frozen kongs, puzzle toys, scent work, or enrichment games. Calming background noise (music or TV) may also help reduce stress. • Prevention: Keep valuable or unsafe items out of reach and redirect inappropriate chewing to acceptable outlets. Bite History: • Incident Details: minor bite when Maka was playing tug of war
