Austin’s mild winters are ideal for Labrador Retrievers. Zilker Park and the Lady Bird Lake hike-and-bike trail provide great exercise. Labs handle the occasional freeze without needing extra layers.

Labs shed heavily as Austin warms. Wildflower season (March-April) makes trail walks at McKinney Falls beautiful. Keep Labs on leash near Lady Bird Lake due to seasonal blue-green algae warnings.

Austin’s intense heat is dangerous for active Labrador Retrievers. Barton Creek swimming holes are great for cooling off, but walk only before 7 AM. Watch for toxic algae blooms in Lady Bird Lake that are deadly for dogs.

Fall

Sep – Nov

September stays hot in Austin, but by late October Labrador Retrievers can return to full-length hikes at the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Fall evenings at Zilker are ideal for fetching and off-leash play.
