About Wolfita
WOLFITA (A1403217) has been placed on final on 04/09/26. Wolfita must be pulled prior to 5 p.m. on 04/13/26 or she will be humanely euthanized. Summary of Behavior: Wolfita is a 95-lb spayed, mixed breed dog who arrived to the shelter initially as a stray. She has an overall FAS score of 1, indicating that she is generally manageable and able to engage with handlers. She is social and friendly with people, frequently seeks attention, knows commands such as sit and paw, and is very treat motivated, which makes her responsive to redirection and handling. In early March, Wolfita displayed nervous kennel behavior, including growling, barking, lip licking, and retreating when approached. She would move between seeking attention and avoiding interaction, indicating underlying stress in the kennel environment. Despite this, she allowed petting and accepted treats without aggression. On April 1st, when removed from the kennel, Wolfita showed a markedly different demeanor. She was easy to leash, walked well, and displayed a loose, affiliative body in the yard. She greeted multiple people appropriately, checked in frequently with handlers, and engaged in a social and friendly manner. She did show some barking and pulling when other dogs passed by, though no direct interaction occurred at that time. On 04/04/26, Wolfita entered a foster-to-adopt placement. On 04/05/26, she was returned due to incompatibility with the resident dog. Initial interactions were appropriate; however, the resident dog became increasingly stressed due to Wolfita’s presence, and cohabitation was not successful. During intake, Wolfita displayed heightened arousal, including barking, jumping, and lunging toward staff and members of the public while near her handler. This behavior was consistent with guarding tendencies in the context of handler proximity. Once removed from that situation, she was able to de-escalate and behave socially with staff. Wolfita has otherwise allowed full handling and has demonstrated the ability to interact appropriately with both people and other dogs. However, she may become overstimulated in certain situations and has a documented instance of guarding behavior involving her handler. Based on these observations, Wolfita has been assessed as HIGH RISK on the Risk Assessment Matrix (Likelihood: Possible | Consequence: Considerable). Path Forward: Rescue or adopter must commit and *pull* Wolfita by 5 PM on 04/13/2026, or Wolfita will be humanely euthanized. Rescue or adopter will also need to have a waiver signed and submitted prior to leaving with the dog. ****WOLFITA IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FOSTER. RESCUE OR ADOPTION ONLY**** EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS: A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal’s Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 10:00 a.m. on the noted ‘final date’ via email to the SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.
