About Brisa
BRISA (A1402368) has been placed on final on 04/09/26. Brisa must be pulled prior to 5:00 PM on 04/15/26 or she will be humanely euthanized. ________________________________________ Summary of Behavior: Brisa has demonstrated a strong contrast in behavior between kennel and non-kennel environments. She has an overall FAS score of 4 in kennel settings, indicating elevated stress and consistent fear-based and arousal-related behaviors when confined. In kennel, Brisa has been observed displaying significant stress signals including barking, retreating to the back of the kennel, whale eye, ears held back (not pinned), lip licking, and avoidance of eye contact. At times, she will move rapidly to the front of the kennel and bark when staff disengage. She has also been observed refusing food and treats while in this state, with food remaining untouched during morning feedings. Additional reports note periods of growling and avoidance, particularly during initial approach, with variability based on handler and context. When removed from the kennel environment, Brisa’s behavior shifts notably. She has been observed with a loose, wiggly body posture, actively soliciting attention from handlers, leaning into petting, and engaging socially in yard settings. She will approach staff with a soft, affiliative demeanor and is generally responsive to handling outside of kennel stress contexts. In structured dog-to-dog assessments, Brisa has shown appropriate social communication, including avoidance of pushier dogs and use of appropriate body language such as play bowing. No sustained aggressive interactions have been documented in controlled settings. Behavior toward other dogs appears context-dependent and influenced by arousal level and environment. Overall, Brisa presents as an environmentally-sensitive dog whose kennel stress significantly impacts her behavior, while she demonstrates substantially more social and affiliative behavior once removed from confinement and given structured interaction. Path Forward: Rescue or adopter must commit and *pull*Brisa by 5 PM on 04/15/2026, or Brisa will be humanely euthanized. Rescue or adopter will also need to have a waiver signed and submitted prior to leaving with the dog. ****BRISA IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FOSTER. RESCUE OR ADOPTION ONLY**** EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS: A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal’s Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 10:00 a.m. on the noted ‘final date’ via email to the SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor. Brisa is a 1-year-old spayed German Shepherd who can be very nervous in the kennel and has been seen baring her teeth and growling when overwhelmed. She allows leashing and handling but needs slow, calm interactions to feel safe. Once outside of the kennel and given time to warm up, Brisa becomes affectionate and seeks gentle pets, nudging hands and leaning in for comfort. She walks nicely on leash, is potty trained, and knows several commands including “come here,” “stay,” “wait,” and “go home.” Brisa would do best in a quiet, adult-only home with an experienced adopter who understands shy dogs and is committed to helping her build confidence. With patience and reassurance, she will be a deeply loyal and devoted companion. 02/11/26 14:15 Heavily pregnant dog in need of rescue. 02/09/26 16:02 Field observations- Extremely shy female, heavily pregnant. Dog saw us and pulled ears back, gave low wag, and turned around and trotted away. Smelled high value treats but did not eat. Nervous at the truck (ears back, whale eye, lip licking, crouching tensely). 02/09/26 17:11 Temperament: whale eye, tail tucked, crouched against wall, upon giving pyrantel began puckering lips and low growling, did not attempt any further interaction with her after that.
