About Durham
Durham is a resilient American Shorthair who came in from the cold with serious injuries and has made a full recovery. She’s enjoying the safe, indoor life now and prefers to spend her days lounging or relaxing with her foster siblings. While Durham is still more comfortable with other cats than people, she’s slowly starting to seek out pets and affection and shows more trust every day. With patience and a caring home, Durham is likely to become a loyal, loving companion. Durham gets along well with both cats and dogs, so she’d do well in a home with other pets. *Adoptions are limited to homes within New Jersey and within an hour’s drive of North Bergen or Florham Park. Distance will be considered for transport and post-adoption support needs, even if you live technically within an hour’s radius. Your new best friend is just one click away.

Questions about Durham
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
Durham, as an American Shorthair, adapts well to a variety of environments, but she does best indoors where she can enjoy a calm and secure setting. She appreciates a home that offers cozy spots for resting and opportunities to interact with other pets or gentle people.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Durham will thrive as an indoor-only cat and does not require outdoor space. American Shorthairs are content with safe indoor environments, especially after her rough start outdoors.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
The American Shorthair is usually patient and tolerant with children. Durham, in particular, is gentle but currently a bit reserved with people, so a home with respectful children who can give her space would be ideal.
