About Fernando Lopez
Fernando Lopez (ACCT-A-245759) is an approximately 10-month-old male dog who was brought in as a stray by an Animal Protection Officer on 3/23. He presents with bony proliferation of the mandible, which may be the result of a previous fracture or a condition such as osteopathy. This issue is expected to be self-limiting; however, Fernando Lopez should be closely monitored in the short term for any signs of pain, as well as potential difficulty eating. Sweet Fernando has figured out how to open his kennel door-what a clever guy! This smart pup is full of potential, eager to learn, and just waiting for someone to help him put those brains to good use. Irregular boney proliferation palpable on the ventral mandible, but no associated pain, soft tissue swelling or instability appreciated. Erythema and papules in both axilla. Thin body condition. Assessment: Superficial corneal ulceration OD Boney proliferation vs callous formation on the ventral mandible - r/o craniomandibular osteopathy (ie "lion jaw") vs malunion fracture Dermatitis, primarily affecting the axilla - open Plan Fluorescein stain OD: positive uptake Skull radiographs: On 3/23 intake staff noted: "Approximately 1-year-old male dog. Quiet, alert, responsive. Eyes, ears, nose clean and clear. Teeth have tartar, smelled bad, and jaw seemed to be swollen or broken. Gums pink and moist." On 3/23 APO noted: "Seems to have an infection/ allergic reaction on the back paws." Behavior: Per volunteer 3/29: Fernando was standing in front of his kennel and after a few tries, he put his head through the leash loop. Fernando walked well to the outside door & then stopped. I opened the door with my foot holding it open and treats lured him outside. He immediately peed and eventually pooped in the run. While outside, Fernando sniffed my had and approached me to sniff some more. He smelled toy but did not take it. When tossed to him, he did not engage. Fernando allowed a few light pets along his back and chest and although he tolerated them, he was a little stiff. Fernando took several treats very slowly. I loosened my leash stopper outside thinking the noise inside might be overwhelming w/leash handling too. He walked on his own back to his kennel. I tossed a treat inside and he walked into his kennel in his own. Later when I saw him, he approached his kennel door & barked. On 3/24 staff noted: "I took Fernando out for a dog meet. He was very nervous so I gave him tiny pieces of treats (on re-feeding plan) and he slowly moved closer to eat the treats. I was able to securely leash him and he walked easily out of the crate. He walked nicely with no issues through the kennels to the eval room where he met Senor Greg. He was hesitant at first with his tail tucked but he went over and sniffed Greg. Greg licked his face and he was very tolerant. He continued to sniff Greg for a long time. He allowed Greg to sniff him in return. He started to loosen up and eventually became looser and gave a low tail wag. He was easy to walk through kennel to return to his crate. No issues removing the leash." On 3/23 APO noted: "Was low growing when i approached him and was bearing teeth. I was able to leash him up with a slow approach and was able to walk him out without any issues. Had to put a blanket over him to get into the van due to him not allowing me to use the suitcase method." On 3/23 APO noted: "Picked up 1 stray confined puppy from the porch of location. Finders mentioned seeing the puppy roaming at the park across the street at 1 am." ACCT Philly is located at 111 West Hunting Park Ave in Philadelphia. We are open for adoptions 7 days a week.
