This is the story of Hope. Hope is a 21⁄2-year-old dog who was surrendered into our care on March 9, 2026 as part of a humane call. When she first walked through our doors, our hearts broke. Hope looked like a walking skeleton. Every bone jutted out from her thin, dirty body, her face was gaunt, and the light in her golden eyes had faded. Many of us had never seen a dog that emaciated. She weighed just 25.6 pounds. Our team immediately sprang into action. Not knowing if Hope would make it, she received round-the-clock care and a full medical workup. When the results came back, they told a heartbreaking but simple truth: Hope wasn't sick. Her condition was entirely due to a lack of nutrition. Because Hope was so dangerously underweight, she was at high risk for refeeding syndrome, a potentially fatal condition that can occur when food is introduced too quickly after severe malnutrition. Every meal had to be carefully portioned while we slowly reintroduced food into her weakened system and monitored her closely. Little by little, we began to see changes. Hope started eating more. Strength returned to her body, and her walks grew longer than just a slow lap around the yard. She began showing interest in toys and started acting like the young dog she is. Her tail wagged more often, and there was finally some pep in her step. Hope has now been with us for a little under a month, and she's pushing 40 pounds. She has gained nearly 50% of her body weight back and continues to improve every day. She can enjoy regular dog treats and is finally able to experience life the way a dog should. Hope recently attended a fundraiser and truly shined. She did wonderfully in the crowd and won people over with her calm, affectionate personality. While Hope may still have some healing ahead of her, her future has never looked brighter. She is officially accepting adoption applications and searching for a forever family who will cherish her, care for her, and give her the life she has always deserved. A life full of love.
