About Cubby

EMERGENCY PLACEMENT DEADLINE CLOSE OF BUSINESS SATURDAY 04/04/26 AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION THROUGH PACC Name: Cubby Animal ID: A836923 Age: 2 year Weight: 59.5 lbs. Web Link: 24petconnect.com/PimaAdoptablePets/Details/PIMA/A836923 About: Meet Cubby, a strikingly handsome blue and white Pit Bull mix who is approximately 2 years old. Cubby originally arrived at PACC in early February after a localized resource-guarding incident involving another dog and a trash can in his previous home. Unfortunately, his owner was unable to afford the necessary veterinary care for the injuries he sustained during the altercation, leading to his surrender. Despite this rough patch, Cubby has proven himself to be an incredibly resilient and loving companion. His previous family, who had him for about a year, noted that he is a dream on a leash, loves going on hikes, and is both crate-trained and a total Velcro dog who prefers to stay right by your side. Our staff and volunteers wholeheartedly agree with his previous owner's assessment, describing Cubby as a sweet, affectionate soul who is quick to offer gentle kisses to his favorite people. He is a playful boy who absolutely treasures his toys and thrives on human interaction. While he is a star with people, Cubby has shown that he is quite selective when it comes to other dogs. In a shelter playgroup setting, he initially presented as nervous and kept to himself, but later incidents indicated that he can be reactive. While he has managed to coexist peacefully with calm dogs of the opposite sex, his history of resource guarding in the home and his selective behavior here at the shelter suggest he would be most successful as the only pet in his future household. Because of these tendencies, Cubby is looking for a dedicated family that understands he is not a candidate for dog parks or off-leash areas where he might encounter unfamiliar dogs. This boundary is important for his own peace of mind and to ensure the safety of other animals. However, with a consistent routine, a well-maintained schedule, and a family familiar with managing resource-guarding behaviors, Cubby has the potential to eventually thrive alongside other dogs through very slow, professional introductions. This handsome, sweet-natured guy has so much love to give and is truly deserving of a forever home where he can be cherished as the loyal companion he was born to be. Available for long term foster care (30+ days) or adoption through PACC. Interested parties: Must visit PACC before the COB Saturday April 4, 2026 deadline to meet with a counselor who will review notes and introduce you to the dog to ensure that it’s a good fit. Some dogs may also require an introduction to any dogs they may potentially live with. Home Management Plan No Other Dogs: resource guards, dog selective, dog altercations in home and in shelter • Cubby is not suitable for a home with other dogs. • Reason: resource guards from dogs, dog selective. • Management: They should be the only dog in the household. Avoid dog parks, group walks, or introductions to unfamiliar dogs to maintain safety and reduce stress. • Behaviors could improve with proper management and/or professional training. Dog Selective: • Required Dog Meetings: Cubby must meet all resident dogs prior to adoption to ensure compatibility. • Selective Play Style: They prefer to choose their own friends - they may get along well with some dogs but not with all dogs. Introductions should be monitored closely for positive body language and relaxed interactions. • Muzzle Training: Conditioning them to a muzzle before introductions is recommended. This provides an added layer of safety while keeping initial meetings low-stress. • No Dog Parks: Cubby should not attend dog parks or other uncontrolled social settings. These environments can lead to negative experiences and may set back progress. • Behaviors could improve with proper management and/or professional training. Resource Guards Items or Food: from dogs • Cubby may guard valued items such as food, toys, bones, or resting spaces. • Management: Do not attempt to take items directly from their mouth or reach into their food bowl. • Feeding Protocol: Feed them separately from other pets and in a quiet, low-traffic area. Allow them to eat undisturbed. Remove food bowls only after they have finished and moved away. • Muzzle Training: Conditioning them to wear a muzzle can be beneficial during resource-handling practice or when introducing high-value items around people or other animals. • Professional Support: Work with a qualified trainer or behaviorist to develop safe management and counterconditioning techniques. • Recognize Warning Signals: Be aware of early signs of guarding behavior, such as stiffening, hovering over items, growling, or showing teeth. Respect these signals by calmly creating distance and redirecting their focus.
