BEEN THROUGH A LOT BUT PUTTING IT BEHIND HIM This sweet boy got dealt some pretty crappy cards in his life. Born to a hoarder, where he lived most of his life in a state of mild neglect with just enough human contact, to dream of having more, he found himself in peril, when his owner died and family could not take any of the dogs. A local independent rescue warrior, familiar with the family of the deceased, agreed to help and ended up with over 14 dogs. Wicket was one of them. Fast forward 8 or so months, and Wicket found himself in the same boat again, when his new caretaker, was killed in a tragic accident. Just as before, family could not absorb all the dogs needing homes, so a cry went out to the rescue community and we responded by taking six, with Wicket being one. Up to this point, Wicket had never known a human to dog ratio that was beneficial to feeling special. He had grown up just being "one of the pack" which showed. Humans were interesting food and water dispensers that were a curiosity and fun to be around but personal relationships were foreign to him. His safety zone was always just a few inches away from human touch. That has drastically changed. We placed Wicket in a foster home, with two loving people and two smaller dogs. The people were kind, patient, gentle and did not hurry him. A lifetime of inadequate care had caused some skin issues that needed to be addressed through proper nutrition and regular attention to his hair coat and in the process of healing him physically, his confidence grew and his heart and spirit healed too. In his foster home, Wicket has discovered a love of stuffed toys and hopes his new home will have a big basket full. His social skills with dogs is very highly developed and he loves to play with doggy friends and then share his bed space with them for nap time, so we are really hoping he has a doggy friend or two, to share life with. He travels well, walks on a leash well, is housebroken and trustworthy when left alone inside, at liberty. He know how to use a doggy door and loves snack and meal time. He still eats his food too fast, due to his prior life of survival so a slow feeder is recommended or hand feeding. He would really appreciate a home where sleeping in the human bed is mandatory because he loves it and sleeps all night without needing a break. Physically, his skin issues are behind him and his soft, silky coat is growing back in quickly. He had a dental, during his neuter where he lost a broken canine but his remaining teeth are now all bright, shiny and healthy. Two things Wicket does NOT care for, are crates and being picked up. These are also most likely due to prior life experience. He will stay in a big x-pen if confinement is necessary but he is trustworthy indoors on his own and hopes his good behavior is appreciated by letting him stay at liberty, when you are away. Wicket, as previously mentioned, is great with other dogs, seems to think cats can be great friends too and though we have not kid tested him, would probably be OK with older children who will respect his space and understand his history. He is not a nuisance barker, but will sound the alarm when something is amiss, then quiet down, when instructed. We cannot say for sure if he is a mix of Yorkie and Cairn terriers, but he has the adorable face, big loving eyes and silky hair coat of the Yorkie with the charm, solid build and can-do attitude of the Cairn. We have taken great pains to bring Wicket back to health, in body and spirit. It is our dream for him, that his forever home will continue on with this care so that he continues to blossom and experience the life he never had when he was younger. He is now about 5-7 years old, weighs 8lbs and is healthy as can be. With good care, he can be expected to enjoy life with his person or people, for another 10-12 years.
