We Rescued these girls from Habersham County Animal Shelter. They were shared over 330 times but no one showed up for them. We hope they have a very different outcome with us. This is their story: He shuffled through our doors slowly, his head low. In his arms were two cat carriers, worn from years of use. Inside them were Miss Kitty and Gracie — patient and completely unaware that their whole world was about to change. You could tell he had been holding it together for a long time... and that walking into the shelter that day had taken everything he had. Miss Kitty is 21 years old. Gracie is 16. Two senior girls who have clearly known nothing but love their entire lives. Their coats are still soft and clean. Their eyes bright. They lean gently into your hand when you pet them — the kind of calm, trusting affection that only comes from years of being someone’s beloved companions. Animals come into shelters every day for all kinds of reasons. Too many of them arrive because they were unwanted, discarded, or forgotten. But this was different. This was one of the times when it was impossible not to see just how deeply these animals had been loved. Their owner was a senior Veteran now spending his days caring for his ill wife. Life had become overwhelming. Between doctor visits, caregiving, and trying to keep everything together, he found himself in a position he never imagined he would face. He didn’t want to let them go. But he wanted to make sure they would be safe. With his head lowered and his voice breaking, he told us about them. How they had been by his side for years. How they sleep together. How they greet him every morning. And then, quietly, he asked us if we could help. He wasn’t asking for himself. He was asking for them. His hands shook as he offered us a folder thicker than a textbook. Years of extensive vetting records. A hair out of place and his beloved girls were immediately seen by a doctor. Before he left, we made him a promise. We promised him we would find a loving retirement home for Miss Kitty and Gracie — somewhere peaceful, somewhere gentle, somewhere they could spend their golden years together. So he could go home and focus on caring for his wife... with one less thing weighing on his heart. Miss Kitty and Gracie are still the sweet, gentle souls they’ve always been. They sit close together, just as they always have. They’re calm and still full of quiet love to give. Now we just need someone to give them a soft place to land. A sunny window. A warm lap.
