MEET ROCKY 🥹 A pup with personality for days! This energetic, playful, and goofy boy is always ready to turn everyday moments into an adventure. Curious about everything around him and fiercely loyal to his people, he’s the kind of dog who wants to be part of whatever you’re doing — whether that’s playtime in the yard or relaxing at home after a busy day. His radar ears are always on alert… though his selective hearing occasionally makes an appearance 😉. Thankfully, he’s incredibly smart and highly food motivated, which makes training both fun and effective. He already knows “kennel,” is house trained, and does well with routine and consistency. He came into the shelter a medical case - unable to close his jaw; it was suggested it could be an autoimmune disease called Masticatory Muscle Myositis. MMM is an immune-mediated disease where a dog’s immune system mistakenly attacks the jaw and head muscles used for chewing - there doesn’t seem to be any verifiable testing was done since the shelter doesn’t finance for medical care. He was put on prednisone and has since tapered off and is doing fantastic! He’s gained 30 lbs and has had no jaw issues or symptoms of any illnesses or issues, but did want to be fully transparent with his history and possible medical needs. He is still working on some food guarding behaviors (likely due to being so underweight), so a patient adopter committed to continued positive reinforcement will be important for his success. The good news? He’s already showing progress. He comfortably shares space around food with Nora (his doggy friend) and has handled treat time and kennel pass-bys without issue. When he has food in his own kennel, he may still growl if other dogs walk by as he continues learning that his meals are safe and secure. He would do best with an adopter who understands structure, boundaries, and the value of continued training.
