About Lloyd Dobler
Say Anything, Anyone? 🎬 Hopefully you get the reference, because I was pretty stoked about revisiting the 80’s with these two names. Even though they are not technically related, I welcomed them both into our program on February 12th. Siblings John and Joan Cusack played brother and sister Lloyd Dobler and Constance in the classic film, so I felt it only fitting to bestow these monikers upon two striking black beauties that resemble one another—save for her tiny white locket and toes. Lloyd, born in early 2022, was the healthier of the two when he arrived, as he had been indoors for about a month (though he was still intact at the time). I first met him in January when his rescuer brought him in for treatment of an inflammatory skin condition known as EGC—Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex. Thankfully, he responded beautifully and almost immediately to treatment. By the time of his recheck appointment and intake a month later, all of the raised, red, inflamed lesions that had covered his undercarriage and sides had completely resolved without a trace. Lloyd did test positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), but he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. Most likely he was the victim of a bite from an infected cat rather than the aggressor. Poor bubby! 💔 Constance, born sometime in early 2024, also came from the northeast side of Grand Rapids, just a bit farther west of Lloyd’s territory. She too had significant skin issues, but hers were secondary to fleas—yes, they can survive on warm bodies even in the coldest of weather! With antibiotics and proper flea control, she turned around in short order and soon began becoming comfortable in her own skin, both literally and figuratively. Constance had previously been TNR’d (trap–neuter–release), but it quickly became clear that she truly desired—and absolutely deserved—to be an indoor cat. Lloyd Dobler is still settling in but doing very well. He tends to hang out by himself much of the time, though he also enjoys pets and treats. He’s actually pretty funny—one second you might get a quick, non-threatening hiss, and the next he’s rubbing all over your ankles. Life on the streets can make shy boys like him a little wary, but the desire for affection is definitely there. He’s warming up to us all more each day. Constance is the sweetest little girl, though she can get overwhelmed by too much noise and commotion. She’s not particularly fond of the higher-energy boys! What she really needs is someone who can help her grow more confident and independent, and who may be home for at least part of the day. She might do well with another calm female cat, but ideally being the princess of her own home would suit her just fine. She deserves to be spoiled and pampered! 👑 And one more thing—she absolutely ADORES belly rubs. Once she feels comfortable with you, she’ll flop right over and beg for them! These are truly two gentle, sweet souls. They are not a bonded pair by any means, but I wanted to write their bios together because of their many similarities—and because their stories felt like they belonged side by side.
