About Teddy
Meet Teddy Teddy’s story is one we won’t forget. A few days ago our rescue phone rang. Twice. A woman left two voicemails saying she was sitting outside the Humane Society with her dog and nowhere else to go. When we arrived, she was standing on a quiet side street playing ball with her dog. Next to her was a large suitcase containing everything she owned in the world. She wouldn’t shake our hand because she said she felt dirty. The dog’s name was Teddy. Teddy is a black Cocker Spaniel mix, about 5 years old and around 40 pounds. He carries tennis balls and toys around like they’re the most valuable treasure on earth. His owner told us she rescued Teddy years ago after seeing children throwing things at him. She took him with her from Mexico… to San Diego… to Tuscaloosa. He had been her companion through everything. But when her car broke down and she had to start walking, she couldn’t carry all of Teddy’s things with her anymore. That’s what she cried about the most. We cried too. When Teddy got into our car and she walked away pulling the suitcase that held everything she had left, Teddy tried desperately to get back to her. At the rescue he completely shut down. For two days he curled into a ball. He wouldn’t eat. He wouldn’t drink. By day three, Teddy decided the world was scary and humans couldn’t be trusted. Then our kennel manager Cody stepped in and slowly started rebuilding Teddy’s trust. Now we’re starting to see the real Teddy again. He is house trained, knows basic commands, and absolutely loves tennis balls. Once he feels safe, his playful and loyal personality shines through. Teddy has lost the only person he knew. What he needs now is something simple but incredibly important: stability. A patient home that understands he’s been through a lot and may need time to feel safe again. But once Teddy trusts you, you’ll have a loyal little sidekick for life. And if you happen to have a tennis ball… you’ll become his favorite person very quickly.
