About Oreo
EMERGENCY PLACEMENT DEADLINE CLOSE OF BUSINESS SUNDAY MARCH 15, 2026 AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OR FOSTER THROUGH PACC Name: Oreo Animal ID: A877416 Age: 2 years Weight: 46.61 lbs. Web Link: 24petconnect.com/PimaAdoptablePets/Details/PIMA/A877416 About: Oreo is a stunning one-year-old Shepherd mix with a beautiful dark black, and brindle coat who is currently searching for a dedicated advocate. Her journey has not been an easy one; she first arrived at PACC in July of 2025 for a bite quarantine but was able to return to her owner afterward. Sadly, she found herself back at the shelter in February 2026 after being found abandoned and tied to a tree at a local church. While we were able to reach her previous owner via her microchip, they have not come back to claim her. Because Oreo is now facing an emergency placement deadline, we are urgently seeking a permanent home or a long-term foster to help her move forward. The bite incident from 2025 was minor and appeared to be a result of Oreo protecting her owner. At the time, they were living unsheltered and were together constantly, which often leads to an incredibly intense bond where a dog feels a strong need to guard their person. In that instance, she was on a long leash and approached a firefighter who was working nearby. It is important for her new family to understand that these protective or guarding tendencies may resurface in a home environment once she forms a secure bond with her new people. To ensure she is set up for success, Oreo’s ideal home would be an adult-only household with experienced owners who understand resource guarding and are prepared to work with her on these behaviors. Interestingly, we rarely see person guarding in a shelter setting because the dogs haven't yet formed that deep, 24/7 attachment to a single individual. In her time with us, Oreo has been a total sweetheart. She has participated in playgroups where she was easygoing and engaged in gentle, dainty play with other dogs. She hasn't shown any guarding of food, toys, or kennel space; in fact, she is currently successfully sharing her kennel with a roommate. She is friendly with handlers and has shown no signs of the reactivity we sometimes see behind kennel barriers. If you are ready to welcome this resilient girl into your life, please keep in mind that PACC requires all interested parties to come to the shelter in person. Calling or emailing will not secure a hold; you must visit us before her deadline expires. Because we want to ensure a perfect fit for her and your family, Oreo will need to meet everyone in the household, including any resident dogs, before heading home. Please come to PACC today and ask to meet Oreo. Available for long term foster care (30+ days) or adoption through PACC. Interested parties: Must visit PACC before the COB Sunday March 15, 2026 deadline to meet with a counselor who will review notes and introduce you to the dog to ensure that it’s a good fit. Some dogs may also require an introduction to any dogs they may potentially live with. Home Management Plan Bite History: • Incident Details: minor bite; victim was working nearby dog and her owner; dog was on a long line and bit victim on the back of the knee causing a minor bite. Possible Resource Guards Attention from People: • Oreo may guard attention or affection from certain people, particularly those they are bonded to. • Muzzle Training: Muzzle training is strongly recommended for all new introductions to ensure safety and reduce stress for both Oreo and others. • Professional Support: Establish clear boundaries early and seek guidance from a qualified trainer to help manage and modify guarding behavior. • Management at Home: Create a calm, designated space where they can relax when guests arrive or when attention is divided. Avoid scolding or punishing guarding behaviors - focus on redirection and rewarding calm, appropriate responses. • Recognize Warning Signals: Watch for signs that they are becoming uncomfortable, such as stiffening, growling or placing themselves between people. These behaviors should be respected by giving space and calmly redirecting their focus. No Kids: • Oreo is not suitable for a home with children. • Reason: due to possible resource guarding people from people. • Management: For safety and comfort, they should be in an adult-only home where interaction can be calm, predictable, and structured
