About Baxter
Are you a fan of small and sometimes independent dogs? We have a pair for you! These sweet dachshunds came to CVHS due to their family suffering a house fire. Burt and Baxter have shown us they really prefer the company of each other, so we'd like them to go to a new home together. Baxter is the more outgoing guy, who will trot confidently around his area, and let you know how he is feeling. He loves to give and receive attention by jumping up on your legs, hoping you'll pick him up, or at least give him some pets. Sometimes he will even roll and show you his belly for gentle rubs. Sometimes, while soaking up attention from his human, he can get jealous if another person approaches, and will nip if they reach for him. Burt is more bashful than Baxter, and definitely looks to Baxter for his confidence. Burt is very sweet, loves to be held and carried. Once he is familiar with you, he loves to sit in your lap for attention. With his personality, he needs an adopter who can let him be him, as he will need time to settle into a new home, and the family's routine. In their prior home, they both were exposed to kids over 6 years old, have not been exposed to cats, and have done ok with other familiar dogs. Both pups like to relax in their crates, especially if they can share one, and both have a habit of barking at new people. While they have that kid exposure, with the small dog nipping behavior, we recommend a home with older children, or none at all. Due to the age and great leash skills of this duo, their adoption fee is $400 for the pair. An optional training class could be added into the adoption fee, if an adopter is interested in continuing their training and bonding. Both dogs are pending canine dentals to keep them in good health, scheduled for March 18, 2026, so we can talk about them going to a home for foster-to-adopt prior to that. Please call the Adoption Center at 802-476-3811, or email info@centralvermonthumane.org, to schedule a time to talk to an adoption counselor about them, and to determine if you should meet Baxter and Burt.
