Meet Bessy! Bessy is a 2-month-old Beagle mix who came into us as a surrender from a commercial breeding facility (aka Puppy Mill) in Lancaster County because she had obvious medical issues from birth and could not be sold. Sadly, poor breeding practices in puppy mills (unhealthy parent dogs, inbreeding, lack of genetic or health screening, and repeated overbreeding) frequently result in puppies being born with serious medical conditions. Rescues like ours are often the only hope for dogs who are born "unprofitable." After Bessy arrived in our care, she was examined by our veterinary team, who discovered that she has two massive hernias-an umbilical hernia and an inguinal hernia. This condition is congenital, meaning she was born with it, and it can become life-threatening if left untreated. Thankfully, both of Bessy's hernias can be surgically repaired, fully resolving the issue. Bessy is a sweet but shy puppy who will require a family up to the task of providing her the ample physical/mental exercise and training that all puppies require.
