About Gabriel

📌 Important Information • All dogs are currently in foster care in Mexico 🇲🇽. They're listed in Oregon for adoption purposes as that's where our rescue is based. • Dogs fly to Portland (PDX) once adoption is approved, arriving within 2–4 weeks. ✈️ This reduces stress for them and ensures safe travel. 💛 About The Meximutt Project (A Born Again Pit Bull Rescue initiative) Over 18 million dogs live on Mexico’s streets. Our rescue works at the source through spay/neuter programs, rescue, and adoption into loving homes. Since 2019: 🐶 500+ dogs adopted • ✂️ 3,500+ dogs spayed/neutered 👉 Interested in adopting? PLEASE FILL OUT APPLICATION AT www.bapbr.org ⚠️ We’re unable to respond to requests that come through Petfinder ************************** 🐾 Meet GABRIEL 🐾 • AGE: ~2 years old • WEIGHT: ~13 lbs • BREED(S): Pug mix (our best guess since they’re rescues!) • GOOD WITH KIDS? Yes, as long as they're taught to respect the dog’s belongings and boundaries. • HOUSEBROKEN? Not 100% yet. As rescues that lived on the street or tile/outdoor surfaces, they'll need some time to adjust. Most of our dogs adapt within 1-2 weeks of consistent training. The first time our volunteer spotted Gabriel, he was wandering through a construction site in the median of a busy Guadalajara highway—cars whipping past on both sides, no way out. She tried to pull over that day but couldn't navigate the traffic. Two days later, she took the same route. He was still there. At least 48 hours in scorching heat, no food, no water. This time, she found a way across. But Gabriel was terrified and wouldn't come to her—it took her and several construction workers to finally get him to safety. Back at her home, she gave him a bath and the full picture came into focus: ribs and hip bones visible beneath matted fur, eyes wide with exhaustion and fear. She put food in front of him and he ate like he'd never seen a meal before. That first night, he watched her from a distance, still not sure what any of this meant. By morning, he'd already started to let his guard down. Within 24 hours of being rescued, he was nudging her hand for pets, trailing her through the apartment, and curling up beside her on the couch. Whatever trauma he'd been carrying seemed to dissolve almost the moment he felt safe. "He transformed so fast," his foster says. "Once he realized he was safe, all he wanted was to be close to me." That instinct—to attach, to love, to trust—has only deepened in the months since. Gabriel is house-trained, calm indoors, good with other dogs and cats, and gentle with everyone he meets. He loves his walks, finally getting to explore the world without facing it alone. But his favorite place is simply wherever you are. He'll settle beside you on the couch, rest his head on your lap, that wrinkly pug face completely at ease. He's affectionate without being clingy—present without being overwhelming. He'll give you your space and quietly keep you company all the same. He did have some separation anxiety early on, but he's worked through it. He doesn't cry, doesn't destroy things. He just waits for you—and when you walk back through the door, he acts like it's the best thing that's ever happened to him. And that overbite? Pure charm. He may look a little grumpy in photos, but spend five minutes with him and you'll understand why everyone who meets Gabriel falls for him immediately. He spent two days alone in a highway median wondering if anyone was coming. Someone was—and now he knows it. He's ready to stop waiting and start living. Is there room in your life for a dog who just wants to be near you—calm, grateful, and completely, endlessly yours? ************************* 📝 Ready to apply?
