About Hugh

Please note: After completing the initial phone screening, you’ll be connected with the foster for a video chat meet and greet. Transports run every few weeks, and approved dogs will be placed on the next available transport. If you’re not ready to adopt until a later date, please wait to apply until that time. We are a volunteer-run rescue, and our team donates time and effort to helping these dogs. If you are not fully committed to moving forward in the adoption process, we kindly ask that you do not apply. If others are involved in the decision-making process, please make sure you’ve discussed the adoption with them and that everyone is on board. We want to ensure we’re using everyone’s time wisely and focusing on finding the right homes for our dogs. Link to adoption application: https://new.shelterluv.com/matchme/adopt/PRP/Dog ___ Hugh aka Hubert is a stunning 3-year-old, 120 lb neutered male merle Great Dane with a goofy personality and an enormous heart. He turns heads everywhere he goes—and once he feels safe, he’s an affectionate, loving boy who bonds deeply with his people. Hugh is currently being fostered in Pflugerville, TX. We're open to arranging private transport out of state for the right home. Hugh was rescued just in time from the San Antonio shelter after being brought in as a stray and placed on the euthanasia list. Since then, he has made meaningful progress in foster care with consistency, structure, and compassionate handling. Hugh does have a behavior history, which we’re happy to discuss openly and transparently with serious adopters. Through working closely with a professional trainer, we’ve learned that Hugh is a very anxious guy. He is currently on Prozac, which has been helping to calm his nervous system and better regulate his emotions. For Hugh, success isn’t about “training” in the traditional sense—it’s about managing anxiety, minimizing stress, and shaping his world in a way that helps him feel safe and predictable. Hugh thrives with slow transitions, clear routines, and relationships that are allowed to develop at his pace. Any adopter should be prepared to go slow with Hugh, respect his boundaries, and continue appropriate safety tools such as muzzle use when needed—especially during stressful or unfamiliar situations. Hugh isn’t a dog who rushes into relationships, but once you’re in his inner circle, you’re truly in. He bonds deeply, seeks out his people, and shows his trust through affection, closeness, and loyalty. Ongoing trainer support will continue to help set both Hugh and his future family up for long-term success. He tends to gravitate toward women, but he currently lives with both a female and a tall adult male in his foster home and absolutely adores them both. Calm energy, patience, and respecting his space go a long way with Hugh. He does best in a quiet, low-traffic home with 1–2 adults max and no children, where expectations are realistic and his environment is intentionally low-pressure. Hugh is dog-friendly and enjoys playing with other pups. A well-balanced, playful dog who doesn’t mind a big guy trying to make friends could be a great bonus, though Hugh would also be perfectly happy as an only dog. He hasn’t been around cats. Inside the home, Hugh is generally calm (though he may want to get on your lap and give you hugs from time to time). He does well with crate time and currently enjoys having a guest room as his personal space, where he naps quietly on his bed surrounded by toys. He may bark to alert if someone knocks, and loud or sudden stimuli—such as fireworks, vacuums, unfamiliar people, or noisy environments—can make him nervous. Hugh walks well on leash, though he may pause to observe people or pull slightly to catch up to another dog ahead—he’s an avid people-watcher. Due to his anxiety, he will need to be muzzled at vet visits for everyone’s safety. He also has environmental allergies that will require ongoing management. He is respectful with toys and bones and shares well with other dogs. Because of his size and reach, counters should be kept clear—he’s not a determined counter-surfer, but curiosity (especially about sponges) can sometimes win. Like all Great Danes, bloat prevention is important. Hugh eats from a slow feeder and does best with small, frequent meals. Given his size, sensitivity, and breed-specific needs, we are seeking an adopter with giant-breed experience or a strong willingness to learn. A large yard or an active adopter who can provide safe outlets for movement and enrichment would be ideal. In the right environment—calm, predictable, and shaped around his needs—Hugh truly thrives, and we see that every day in foster care. He’s been through a lot, and the right home will make all the difference. If you’re looking for a loyal, deeply affectionate companion and are willing to meet a dog where he is, Hugh has so much love to give. Adoption Process: Our process begins with an application. If we feel you may be a good fit, we’ll follow up with a phone interview, a video call with his foster home, and a virtual home visit. Personal and veterinary references are required. ADOPTION DONATION: $300 ___ Breed and Age Notice: The listed breed and age are our best estimates. In most cases, we do not know a dog’s exact age or full breed mix, as information is often limited.
