About Cardinal
EMERGENCY PLACEMENT DEADLINE CLOSE OF BUSINESS SUNDAY 03/01/26 AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION OR FOSTER THROUGH PACC Name: Cardinal Animal ID: A780186 Age: 6 years Weight: 55 lbs. Web Link: 24petconnect.com/PimaAdoptablePets/Details/PIMA/A780186 About: Cardinal is a 6-year-old, fawn-colored Pit mix with a face that is as charming as it is handsome. He has a long history with us here at PACC; he first arrived as a stray in June 2022 and was adopted that fall. Sadly, he found his way back to us in December 2025, once again as a stray. Cardinal is currently on an Emergency Placement Deadline and is searching for a long-term foster or a forever adopter who can provide him with the specific environment he needs to succeed. Cardinal is what we call dog selective, and his recent behavior in playgroup has shown that he is no longer a candidate for multi-dog environments. Due to a recent incident in playgroup where he became over-stimulated and unable to redirect, Cardinal is looking for a home with no other pets. While he previously showed a specific dislike for fluffy dogs, he has recently engaged in altercations with dogs of all types. To keep Cardinal and the community safe, he cannot visit dog parks or busy areas where he might encounter other dogs. Cardinal is currently receiving some extra TLC from our medical team. He is pending a Valley Fever test and has a mass that needs to be removed. PACC is committed to handling his medical needs: • For Fosters: If you take Cardinal into your home as a foster, PACC will provide all medications and medical treatments at no cost to you. • For Adopters: If you are interested in adopting, Cardinal will start with a trial adoption until his test results are back. His mass removal will be covered by PACC, whether that happens before he leaves the shelter or via a scheduled follow-up appointment. Because Cardinal has arrived as a stray twice, we have to assume he may have some containment issues. He will need a home with a very secure yard and a family that will monitor him during outdoor time. He also needs a strong handler who is mindful of door darting and can securely manage him on a leash. Despite his challenges with other animals, Cardinal is a friendly, people-loving boy. He is simply a one-and-only kind of dog who wants to be the center of your world. Available for long term foster care (30+ days) or adoption through PACC. Interested parties: Must visit PACC before the COB Sunday March 1, 2026 deadline to meet with a counselor who will review notes and introduce you to the dog to ensure that it’s a good fit. Some dogs may also require an introduction to any dogs they may potentially live with. Home Management Plan No Other Dogs: • Cardinal is not suitable for a home with other dogs. • Reason: seen in the shelter multiple times, he has shown dog selectivness • Management: They should be the only dog in the household. Avoid dog parks, group walks, or introductions to unfamiliar dogs to maintain safety and reduce stress. • Behaviors could improve with proper management and/or professional training. Containment Issues: • Cardinal has a known history of coming to the shelter as a stray. • Escape Method: since we have not been able to get in contact with previous owners to find out how he is escaping we are not sure. • Supervision and Safety: Keep them on leash until fully acclimated to the home and routine. Do not leave unattended outdoors or in unsecured areas. • Preventative Measures: Ensure fences are secure and at an appropriate height. Regularly check gates, latches and weak points for damage or loose areas. • Longline Use: When spending time outdoors in an enclosed yard, use a longline to give them extra space to explore while keeping them safe and under control. Do NOT use tie outs, leash should be held and maintained by the handler at all times. Should NOT be used in unenclosed or public spaces. Pending medical Valley Fever needs mass removal
