About Mikey
Meet Mikey - Our Brave Little One-Eyed Warrior! Mikey is an approximately two-year-old Chihuahua with a story that will absolutely melt your heart. This tiny boy, around 14 pounds, had a very rough start to life. He was surviving on the streets in Texas when he was rescued. During that time, he was attacked and suffered injuries to his sweet little face, which sadly resulted in the loss of his left eye. But don't worry - Mikey doesn't let having one eye slow him down one bit! If anything, it just adds to his charm and makes him even more special. Mikey is currently heartworm positive, but we are committed to getting him healthy. If adopted, the rescue will cover his heartworm treatment until he tests negative. He will be retested after one year, and all treatment will be done at Auglaize Animal Hospital in Wapakoneta, therefore he will need to go to a family that is local to the area . We want his future family to focus on loving him - we'll handle the medical support of the heartworm until he tests negative. In addition, once Mikey tests negative for heartworm, he will be neutered, and that will also be fully covered by the rescue at Auglaize Animal Hospital. Mikey also has IVDD, which is a spinal condition similar to arthritis. It mostly affects the top of his back and shoulders. Because of this, he takes gabapentin daily to help manage any discomfort. He does very well on his medication, but he does need a family who understands that his back can be sensitive. When picking him up, he must be gently cradled and supported properly. If lifted incorrectly and it hurts, he may give a little nip - not out of meanness, but because he's protecting himself from pain. Once you learn how to hold him correctly, he is perfectly content being scooped up and snuggled. And oh, the snuggles! Mikey is an absolute cuddle bug. He loves being petted, loves to give little hugs, and just wants to be close to his people. After everything he's been through, all he truly wants is safety and love. He is good with kids and absolutely adores people. He is okay with other small dogs - he may grumble at first, but he is currently living in a home with other small dogs and does just fine once he adjusts and realizes they aren't going to hurt him. Mikey loves treats (seriously, they are the way to his heart ) and does pretty well with potty training as long as he's taken outside frequently and kept on a routine. He is up to date on his vaccinations and is ready to find a family who will see past his scars and recognize the incredible little survivor he is. Mikey may only have one eye, but he sees the world with a whole lot of love. Now he just needs someone to see him the same way.
