About Doctor Beef

Doctor Beef is an affectionate and spunky girl who is looking for a family that's ready to welcome her playful personality into their home. She is house trained, mostly crate trained (she does experience separation anxiety but the more comfortable in our home she becomes the easier she settles once she's alone), and has a very solid sit. We are currently working on some more commands like "stay" and "wait" and tricks like "spin". She is easy to train because she really enjoys being rewarded with a treat. Around the house she is both happy to do her own thing or be right next to you but she loves playtime with games like tug, catch, and is obsessed with her squeak toy! She is very curious so you will have to keep an eye on her if your home isn't fully dog proofed while you continue her training. We haven't had any instances of her destroying anything but we also are very diligent about leaving things around that she might be interested in. She is always up for adventures in the car and around the neighborhood, and is medium to high energy most of the time although she does love a lazy morning in bed with you! I think she would do really well with a family who is able to take her along on outings such as hiking, running, camping, and the beach as she loves to explore new places and smells. Even though she has a decent amount of energy, she is able to settle down extremely well without having to be encouraged to. She sleeps between playtime, walks, and meals. Doctor Beef sleeps through the night, is fairly quiet unless she is experiencing anxiety or stress, and sits very well in the car. She may do well with another dog and I imagine that once she was comfortable living with another dog, she would want a playmate that can match her energy. She walks OK on the leash. She has a very swift walk and we are working on her pulling right now, which she has shown improvement with but still needs some work. We do clicker training (which she is really loving!) and I think that within the next week or so she will walk much better. She has had negative interactions with our cat and has a strong drive to chase. She would do best in a home without any cats or small animals unless you have experience managing prey drive long term. She has met two people who do not live in my household, my female friend and my brother. My female friend she did very well with and enjoyed spending time with her but she was extremely skeptical of my brother and hard barked with wide eyes while he was here for dinner. Over the course of the evening she calmed down but it does appear that she is wary of men because she also has a different response to men and women who pass by on our walks as well. Doctor Beef would do best in a home where she has ample room to run and play (or can go on frequent, engaging walks/adventures) and with a family who is ready to take the time to allow her to properly decompress. She can be very "stranger danger" both in the home and on walks and would prefer slow introductions to new people and animals. Like most dogs, she does require some patience while acclimating to a new home with different expectations but once she understands what you're asking her to do she does it beautifully. She has had a few accidents in the house but I don't think they are house training issues, we think she may be a dog who pees submissively so while you can be firm with her, you also have to be kind while building up her confidence. She is a bright, happy dog. When you come home she will greet you with a wiggly butt and a toy to show off, when you sit with her she will crawl onto your lap (whether or not she fits) and ask for pets, and when you get in bed at night she will happily snuggle next to you and soundly sleep through the night. Doctor Beef is the type of dog who is happiest wherever you are.
