About Whitman

Whitman is a big-hearted German Shepherd with a calm, loving personality that wins people over fast. At seven years old and about 90 pounds, he mixes a youthful spark with that classic Shepherd wisdom. He’s playful, goofy, and impressively gentle—when he leans into you or rests his head on your leg for affection, you can see how much he loves being near his people. He bonds beautifully with men, women, and respectful kids ages five and up, and he’ll follow his favorite person around the house just to stay close. He’s got quirky habits—when excited for a walk or dinner, he bounces around like a puppy. If something’s on his mind, Whitman will bark or prance to keep you in the loop. Fully house-trained, crate-trained, and solid on his basics (“sit,” “down,” “leave it”), he still needs his crate when alone, as he’s known to go shoe or trash diving if no one’s watching. At night, he sleeps best near you, content out of the crate. He gets along with cats he’s lived with (though his excitement can be a bit much for older ones), and he’s selective with other dogs, so meets are important. He might be happiest as the only dog. Whitman’s a fan of bananas, peanut butter, and snowy play sessions, and he appreciates a good brushing to manage all that Shepherd shedding. He isn’t crazy about car rides or loud noises, but he cooperates for baths. Whitman also manages some common medical needs—arthritis, allergies, and a mild heart rhythm issue—but takes medication like a pro. He’s eager to please, enjoys routines, and might flinch at loud voices due to a rocky past, but a gentle touch brings out his loyal, trusting side. He’d thrive in a home with a fenced yard and would fit a range of family styles, as long as kids are mindful. What he really wants is a warm spot by your side and plenty of love. If a loyal, goofy, and wise companion fits what you’re looking for, Whitman is ready. Lets make it official, apply to adopt!
