About Franco

"Franco" is an approx 5-yo, 85-lb neutered male GSD who is sweet, playful and well-mannered. Franco is healthy, up-to-date on core vaccinations, and microchipped. Franco is friendly with everyone he meets, both inside the house and beyond. We have yet to observe him with children, but it’s almost a given that he’ll be good with kids given his easy-going temperament. Franco has shown no resource guarding over food or toys. Franco is great with other dogs! In his previous home, he lived with two Golden Retrievers and loved to play with them. We have not observed Franco with small dogs, but there’s little doubt that he’ll be fine with them. We would actually prefer that Franco go to a home with another dog, as he did exhibit some separation anxiety when left by himself in his previous home. We have not observed Franco around cats, but it’s likely that he’ll be OK with them. On walks, Franco has shown no noticeable prey drive towards deer or wild turkeys, which is a good indicator that he’ll be OK with cats. Franco is housetrained and has had zero accidents in the house (with regular backyard relief breaks) in the few days since we rescued him (Jan 24). Franco sleeps quietly in his crate at night and goes into the crate voluntarily during the day for an hour or two. Franco walks easily on a leash, with no strong pulling. He is very enthusiastic about other dogs he sees on his walks and wants to greet them! He obeys a few simple commands such as “sit” & “shake”, but is not particularly treat-motivated. Franco likes to go for car rides and is a polite passenger. (His foster caretaker does have a barrier between the front & back seats.) So far, Franco has shown no interest in playing with toys or balls. Franco was originally abandoned with two other dogs in early Nov 2025 at a house in Monterey. The neighbors brought the dogs food and water until animal control came to pick them up. Franco was adopted from the Monterey County Shelter in Salinas on Dec 3, 2025, but his adopter returned him on Jan 22 because he had jumped her 4-ft front yard fence on three occasions to greet (in a friendly fashion) a woman walking her small dog. The woman was afraid of Franco and reported each of the “incidents” to animal control. GSRSV rescued Franco from the shelter on Jan 24. Franco is presently in a foster home in Pebble Beach, CA. His adoption fee is $250.
