Mater
AvailableMater is a male Great Pyrenees/Boxer mix currently in Newport, KY. He is an adult, extra-large dog who is neutered. Mater has made a lot of progress with training and managing his anxiety in his foster home, and he is looking for a quiet, stable environment where he can continue to thrive.
About Mater
Mater is a sweet, quirky guy who shows off the characteristic traits of a Great Pyrenees/Aussie Shepherd mix. Big changes can be tough for him, so a foster-to-adopt approach is recommended to make sure he adjusts well and feels at home. After nearly two years bouncing around various homes and boarding situations, Mater has learned a lot with his foster family. Working with a professional trainer, following a daily routine, and taking fluoxetine for anxiety have all helped him settle in. When storms or fireworks roll in, he gets backup trazodone to help manage his nerves. In his foster home, Mater has learned to wait his turn for meals, follow house rules, and is working on seeing his crate as a positive, safe spot. He lives peacefully with two female dogs, playing well as long as toy rules are respected. Resource guarding happens when he's with dominant dogs, but with the right management, he's able to relax and play. Mater isn’t comfortable with small dogs or cats, and puppies with no sense of boundaries can make his anxiety spike. He’ll bark loudly at strangers at first but settles in when things stay calm; a quiet, predictable home without a lot of visitors suits him best. Mater’s made impressive progress and needs adopters ready to keep building on what he’s learned, offering structure and the patience he deserves. He’s waiting for that right fit to finally call home.
