Hawkeye, a four-year-old orange male with a stubby tail, has come a long way since arriving as a feral cat. Early on, he wasn’t shy about showing his fear—hisses, growls, swats, and quick escapes were part of his daily vocabulary. If really startled, he’d even make a mess before making a break for it. For three years, he mostly observed from the sidelines as other cats were petted and sneaked treats. Patience and watching those interactions eventually wore down his suspicion. These days, Hawkeye lets most people pet him, especially if they offer booty scratches—which he loves. He’s even learned to headbutt for attention so you don’t forget him when loving on other cats. Occasionally, if he’s overwhelmed, he’ll retreat to a high shelf and hiss, but he stays put and lets it pass, signaling that he just needs a breather until he feels ready to interact again. Hawkeye has spent half his life in the shelter. He needs a family willing to let him approach at his own speed, who will give him the safe, loving space he deserves.
