About Cedar
Cedar is a standout at St. Louis Senior Dog Project and one of the team's most memorable long-term fosters. Around 7 years old and 60 lbs, he’s sharp, playful, friendly, and brimming with personality. Cedar adores people and forms strong bonds—he’s especially known for his loyalty and cleverness. Multiple, slow introductions let him get comfortable with other dogs, but he’s not suited for homes with small animals or small dogs. He’s a talker, vocal about his opinions and especially animated during car rides and playtime—because of this, a home without shared walls works best. In foster care, Cedar shares a friendship with Rugby, enjoying walks, wrestling sessions, and couch cuddles. Cedar pulls hard on the leash, sometimes lunging at cars or dogs, so he needs a strong handler comfortable with these behaviors. Those herding instincts make him unsuitable for homes with young children, since he’ll try to herd other dogs and people. Cedar is house trained, neutered, and up to date on vaccinations. Questions about Cedar
What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?
Cedar, a Norwegian Elkhound and Shetland Sheepdog mix, thrives in a home with space to be active and where he won’t share walls with neighbors due to his vocal nature. These breeds do best in houses with yards rather than apartments.
How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?
Cedar’s breeds prefer regular access to a secure yard and frequent walks. They benefit from room to roam and explore, so a fenced yard is ideal for him.
Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?
Cedar’s herding instincts make him a poor fit for homes with young children, since he may try to herd them. Older teens or adult households are generally better for this mix.
