About Spencer

Meet Spencer. Spencer is a 1-year-8-month-old shepherd/Black Mouth Cur mix who’s managed to keep his big-dog optimism despite having a rough start. He ended up in the Vernon Parish Animal Shelter at the start of the year and barely escaped euthanasia—he was the last of 19 dogs saved in those frantic final minutes. After eight months in foster care, he’s still waiting for a home of his own. Spencer weighs about 60 lbs and is up to date on his shots, heartworm negative, neutered, and crate trained. He adores belly rubs, fetch, and anything that involves his favorite balls or ropes. He gets along well with larger dogs but hasn’t been tested around small dogs. Spencer has a strong prey drive, so he’d do best in a fenced yard and a home without cats or small animals. He’s playful and affectionate but doesn’t know his own size—he might accidentally knock over small kids in excitement. On leash, he walks well and happily soaks up human attention. After being overlooked for so long, Spencer deserves his shot at a real family. Click apply to start the adoption process.

Questions about Spencer

  • What type of living environment is this breed usually best suited for?

Spencer, being a shepherd and Black Mouth Cur mix, tends to do well in homes with access to a yard or outdoor space, preferably with a secured fence. These breeds thrive in active households where they can get plenty of exercise and engagement.

  • How much outdoor space does this breed typically need?

Shepherd and Black Mouth Cur mixes like Spencer benefit from ample outdoor space, such as a fenced yard where they can play and burn off energy. While not strictly required, somewhere to run safely helps channel their prey drive and keeps them happy.

  • Is this breed typically suitable for homes with children?

While Spencer is playful and friendly, his size and enthusiasm mean he might unintentionally knock over small children during play. Older children who are comfortable around big dogs would be a better fit.
