Duke’s owner recently passed away and Duke was scheduled to be euthanized. We stepped in to help. An organization called Pilots N Paws offers free flights to pets in need and two pilots stepped up to donate their time, fuel, and flight miles to transport Duke from central Texas to west Tennessee! Duke arrived on August 5th and settled into our sanctuary. He was evaluated by a trainer who noted Duke is a gentle senior who is socialized to people and does very well in many situations including going to Tractor Supply, walking on a leash, sitting calmly when his person is carrying on a conversation then getting up when called. He also did just fine with children. Duke does have a prey drive and may chase an animal that runs. He appears to react if another dog or cat shows dominant behavior but appears to do well with easy going dogs and potentially cats. Duke is a 10-year old senior pit bull who is kind, loving, and easy going. He is housetrained and current on his rabies vaccination. He does have an eye that has recessed into his head. The eye ball itself is healthy but the muscle that holds the eye in place has atrophied so it is isn't able to hold the eye in its proper place. It looks weird but he can still see and there are no health issues related to it. We paired Duke with a young puppy named Cocoa due to space issues at the rescue and a funny thing happened that we did not expect. Duke and Cocoa have bonded very strongly. Duke has taught Cocoa manners and how to use the dog door and Cocoa has taught Duke about love. They romp around together and play and Cocoa has brought out the young boy in Duke. Because of this we do want this unusual pairing to be adopted together.
