About Onyx
Onyx, affectionately known as Onnie by those who’ve spent time with her, gives out kisses and affection once she knows you, but earning that trust takes some patience and know-how. Meeting new people is tough for her; she’ll bark first and size you up, which often puts off potential adopters. But the many volunteers who stuck around after her first impression are now proud members of the Onyx club, reaping the rewards of loyalty and connection. Onyx has spent much of her young life in the shelter, and it shows in her nervous greetings. She does her best when she’s with experienced dog people who know how to read her cues and offer reassurance. On leash, she’s trusting, and despite her sometimes noisy reactions to strangers, she means no harm—she just has a lot of feelings to work through. When she lets her guard down, she’s a top-tier cuddler, soaking up lap time and doling out love to her people. Her shiny black coat and pleading eyes are hard to ignore. She plays well with other dogs at the shelter and could be a good fit in a home with another active dog, given proper intro and ongoing support. Visits are available in Washington, PA on weekends or by appointment. Onyx is looking for an adopter who’s committed, patient, and understands her quirks. Give her a true shot at a family and she’ll prove herself ready to love. Your new best friend is just one click away.
