About Butch

Butch is the dog who took his time deciding people were safe — and then decided all at once. When he first arrived at Dallas Animal Services as a stray, he kept to himself. He stayed frozen in one spot, shy and timid, not sure about anyone getting close. Then someone offered a treat, and he took it so gently from their hand that his tail started wagging. By his next visit he was laying quietly in his kennel, sitting up when someone came in, and then — belly rubs. He rolled right over for them. That is the dog underneath the fear: a sweet, gentle boy who wants to trust people, and just needs a little time to get there. We tagged Butch on November 5, the day he was scheduled for euthanasia at Dallas Animal Services because his medical needs were more than the shelter could manage. He came in with significant trauma to his hind end — pelvic fractures on both sides of his lower pelvis, which are not displaced, and possible fractures in the front of the metatarsal bones in both back feet. He also has multiple healing sores on his head, body, and back legs, a dull, dry coat, and he has been very painful and reluctant to put weight on his left rear leg. He is heartworm positive and has started doxycycline as part of his heartworm treatment. He is on antibiotics and pain medication, and he needs medicated baths for his skin. His recovery is uncertain, and we want to be honest about that. An early vet review was hopeful that strict rest and leash walks for about six weeks could heal the pelvic fractures. A later review on November 5 was more guarded about his rear-leg mobility without additional therapy, and said he needs more imaging of his sacrum and spine to know what comes next. What is certain is that he needs rest, pain management, and a calm, quiet home while his vets figure out the next steps. In playgroup he was social and tolerant, with a dainty and gentle play style, happily exploring the yard. He is a big, lean boy who needs a home that can give him time, patience, and a soft place to heal — and that will love him for the gentle soul he is showing us, one treat and one belly rub at a time.
