Belgian Shepherds come from Belgium, where herding dogs were sorted into one breed in 1891. It has four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the wiry Laekenois. Most are square, elegant dogs of 40 to 75 pounds with upright ears and a proud stance, and the AKC calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog.
They're watchful, sensitive and devoted, with a work drive that made them police and military favorites. That drive follows them home. Many Belgians do best with an adopter who enjoys training, wants a dog close by and has hours for exercise. Dogs vary, and many shelter dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd are Malinois or Malinois mixes. Coat length shapes how much hair ends up on your floors.
