The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian herding dogs, alongside the Malinois, Tervuren and Belgian Sheepdog. It's named for the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence, where rough-coated shepherds tended flocks and guarded linen bleaching in the fields. The American Kennel Club added the breed to its Herding Group in 2020.
Look for an athletic dog of roughly 45 to 65 pounds with a tousled fawn to reddish coat and a dark muzzle. Many Laekenois are intelligent, devoted to their families and reserved with strangers, which matters on crowded city sidewalks. They need daily exercise, training and real mental work, so they suit active adopters who want a capable partner. Each dog's energy and confidence will differ.
