The Belgian Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian herding breeds. It's named for the Chateau de Laeken, a Belgian royal residence where rough-coated shepherds tended flocks, and the American Kennel Club placed it in the Herding Group in 2020. Most stand 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 45 to 65 pounds, with a tousled fawn to reddish coat and a dark muzzle.
Laekenois are intelligent, alert and devoted to their families, and they usually stay reserved with strangers. They live about 10 to 14 years and do best with active people who enjoy training and give them real work to do. Because the breed is uncommon, many dogs you meet may be Belgian mixes, and each dog's energy and temperament will differ.
