The Belgian Shepherd is one herding breed with four coat varieties: the long black Groenendael (the AKC's Belgian Sheepdog), the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. Belgium's farm dogs were sorted into a single breed in the 1890s, and all four share a square, elegant build and a proud, upright head carriage. Many dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd turn out to be Malinois or Malinois mixes.
These dogs are intense, watchful and devoted to their people, with a work drive that made them famous as police and military dogs. That drive needs an outlet, and Denver offers plenty, from long greenway walks to the city's off-leash dog parks, but a Belgian also needs structured training, not just space. Dogs vary, and a calm, engaged home often brings out the affectionate side.
