The Laekenois is the rarest of the four Belgian herding breeds, named for the Chateau de Laeken in Belgium, where rough-coated shepherds tended flocks and guarded linen bleaching in the fields. The AKC added it to the Herding Group in 2020. Its tousled, harsh fawn to reddish coat and dark muzzle give it a shaggier look than its Malinois, Tervuren and Sheepdog relatives.
Many Laekenois are intelligent, alert and devoted to their families while staying reserved with strangers. They typically stand 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 45 to 65 pounds, and they want daily exercise and real mental work. Each dog varies, so meet the one you are considering and look at how it behaves around people and other dogs.
