Mixed Breed isn't a breed but a label for any dog whose ancestry combines two or more breeds, or is unknown. Adoptable mixes range from compact terrier mixes under 20 pounds to shepherd, hound or retriever mixes over 70, and coat, color, ears and build can come from any branch of the family tree. Most weigh between 20 and 70 pounds and live 10 to 15 years.
In Lewisburg, that variety is useful. A dog with hound or terrier roots may want to sniff and follow scents on the Greenbrier River Trail east of town, while a calmer mix may be happy with neighborhood loops and a long nap. Research suggests breed explains only a small part of behavior, so spend time with a dog and watch how it handles people, leashes and new places rather than relying on looks.
