The Belgian Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding breed developed around Mechelen, Belgium, in the 1890s. It's a lean, square dog with a black mask, erect ears and a weather-resistant double coat that sheds heavily twice a year. Related varieties include the long-haired Groenendael and Tervuren and the rough-coated Laekenois.
Police and military teams prize Malinois for speed, focus and drive, and those same traits make them demanding at home. In Charleston, where hills and river trails give a dog plenty to chase, a Malinois needs structure, early socialization and a job to do. Many are deeply devoted to their families, though dogs vary, and some do better with experienced handlers than in a first-time home.
