The Bedlington Terrier comes from the mining country around Bedlington, Northumberland, in England, where it was valued for catching vermin and rabbits. Its pear-shaped head, woolly topknot and arched back give it a lamb-like look, but the body underneath is lithe and fast, with likely Whippet ancestry.
Most Bedlingtons are affectionate and playful at home and fairly mellow after exercise, though many have a strong chase instinct. The crisp, curly coat sheds very little but needs brushing several times a week and a professional clip about every two months. In Charleston, that routine and a secure leash habit matter more than square footage. Dogs vary, so a Bedlington's own personality, age and history count as much as the breed description.
