The Malinois is the short-haired fawn variety of the Belgian Shepherd, a herding dog from the Mechelen region of Belgium. Registries differ on classification: the AKC lists four separate breeds, while most others treat them as one breed with four coat varieties. The Malinois is lean and square, with a fawn-to-mahogany coat, black mask and upright ears, and its double coat sheds heavily twice a year.
Police, military and search-and-rescue teams value the breed for its speed, focus and drive. At home, those traits mean a dog that wants daily work, from training to fetch to long runs. Many Malinois are deeply loyal and sensitive, though some are reserved with strangers or tempted to chase anything that moves. Dogs vary, so the match depends on the dog in front of you as much as the breed.
