With its powder-puff white coat, dark eyes and plumed tail curled over its back, the Bichon Frise is a small companion dog of Mediterranean origin. Its ancestors traveled with sailors, charmed European royal courts and later performed with street entertainers and circuses, and the modern breed was standardized in France and Belgium in the twentieth century.
Many Bichons are cheerful, playful and sociable, fond of people, other dogs and attention in general. They tend to adapt well to apartments and homes of many sizes, though they dislike long hours alone and some take a while to house train. Their curly, low-shedding coat traps loose hair, so it needs frequent brushing and professional grooming every few weeks. Allergies, dental disease and bladder stones are health concerns worth planning for.
