The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and was developed as a water retriever, probably in Germany, long before the show clip made it famous. It's a square, athletic dog, usually 18 to 24 inches tall and 40 to 70 pounds, with a dense curly coat that sheds very little.
Standards are bright, sensitive and quick to learn, and most bond closely with their people. They tend to do best with owners who enjoy training and daily activity, and some struggle with long stretches alone. In Tacoma, the coat is the main chore: brushing several times a week and a professional trim every six to eight weeks keeps rain-soaked curls from matting. Energy and confidence vary from dog to dog.
