The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three Poodle sizes and the closest to the breed's roots as a water retriever. Standing 18 to 24 inches tall and weighing roughly 40 to 70 pounds, it is a square, athletic dog with a dense, curly coat in solid colors from black and white to apricot and silver.
Standards are clever, sensitive and often a little reserved with strangers, with a playful streak that lasts well into adulthood. They bond closely with their people and enjoy training. The low-shedding coat keeps growing, so plan on professional grooming every six to eight weeks plus brushing several times a week, and more often when snow and mud cling to it. Each dog's energy and sensitivity differ.
