French Bulldogs trace back to small Bulldogs that English lace workers took to France in the 1800s, where they were crossed with local dogs. Adults weigh about 16 to 28 pounds, with a big square head, upright bat ears, loose skin and a short, smooth coat in brindle, fawn, cream or white patterns. Shedding is low to moderate.
Most Frenchies are playful, affectionate and fairly quiet, which helps in buildings with shared walls. The flat face is the catch: airway trouble, overheating, skin-fold infections and spine problems are common, so plan for regular veterinary care. Terms like "mini" or "teacup" are marketing, not real varieties, and a dog labeled French Bulldog may be a mix, so get to know the dog in front of you rather than the label.
