The Appenzell Mountain Dog, called the Appenzeller Sennenhund in Switzerland, is one of four tricolor Swiss mountain dog breeds and the most energetic of them. It comes from the Appenzell region in the country's northeast, where it drove cattle, guarded farms and sometimes pulled carts. Medium-sized and muscular, it has a short, dense double coat in black or brown with white and rust markings, and its tail curls over its back.
Appenzellers are lively, alert and often reserved with strangers, yet devoted to their own people. They usually need daily exercise, training and a real job to stay content. In Seattle that can mean trail time at Discovery Park or around Green Lake, plus puzzle games on wet days. The breed is rare in the US, and dogs vary, so an active, experienced household often suits one best.
