The American Hairless Terrier is the only hairless breed developed in the United States. It began in 1972 in Louisiana, when a hairless puppy named Josephine was born into a litter of coated Rat Terriers, and the AKC recognized the breed in 2016. Hairless dogs are born with fuzz that falls out within weeks, while the coated variety has a short, smooth coat.
Most are small, muscular and curious, with the chasing and digging instincts of their ratting ancestors. Many learn quickly with reward-based training, though terrier stubbornness can show up. In Seattle, skin care is the daily question: sun protection on bright days, a warm layer through the damp months and a gentle rinse after muddy walks, in return for very little hair on the sofa.
