Belgian Shepherds began as herding dogs on Belgian farms and were sorted into one breed in 1891, with four coat types: the long black Groenendael, the long fawn Tervuren, the short fawn Malinois and the rough-coated Laekenois. Registries differ on whether they're one breed or four, and the American Kennel Club calls the Groenendael the Belgian Sheepdog. Many dogs labeled Belgian Shepherd in adoption listings are Malinois or Malinois mixes.
All share a square, elegant build and an alert, upright look, usually between 40 and 75 pounds. In Virginia Beach, coat matters: a long double coat sheds heavily twice a year and holds heat through humid summers, while a short Malinois coat is easier but still sheds. Expect a dog that wants a job, whether that's trail miles, scent games or obedience work, and plan for it before bringing one home.
