The Basset Hound began as a French hunting hound used to trail rabbit and hare on foot, and the heavier modern type with its long ears, loose skin and heavy bone was developed in Britain. Those ears and that nose are built for following ground scent, and only the Bloodhound is considered better at it.
In Virginia Beach, that nose has plenty to work with, from the wooded trails at Marshview Park to the shoreline paths at Pleasure House Point. Bassets are usually mellow, sociable and tolerant of children and other dogs, though they can be stubborn and loud, with a bay that carries through apartment walls. Expect moderate shedding, regular ear care and careful feeding, since extra weight strains a long back. Dogs vary, so each Basset's own personality matters more than the breed description.
