The Australian Kelpie is a lean, prick-eared herding dog developed in Australia in the 1870s from Scottish working collies to move Merino sheep across hot, open country. Stamina and toughness are its signature, and the breed is still uncommon in the US, mostly seen as ranch and sport dogs. Kelpies come from two strands, show lines and working lines, so looks and drive vary quite a bit.
Many Kelpies are alert, quick to learn and devoted to their people, but a dog with nothing to do may herd kids, chase bikes, bark or find destructive projects. In Virginia Beach, that points toward adopters who enjoy running, training or dog sports and can offer a securely fenced yard. The short double coat sheds moderately and needs only regular brushing at home.
