Australian Cattle Dogs, also called Blue Heelers or Queensland Heelers, were developed in nineteenth-century Australia to drive cattle over long distances in heat and dust. They're compact, muscular dogs, usually 35 to 50 pounds, with a short, weatherproof double coat in blue or red speckle. Puppies are born white and color in over the first weeks.
Heelers are clever, loyal and alert, and many attach closely to one person. Herding instincts can show up as nipping at heels, chasing bikes or bossing other pets, and a bored Heeler invents its own jobs, like chewing and digging. Shedding is moderate, with a heavier coat blow once or twice a year. In Virginia Beach that means a dog that needs daily outings and training more than a big house. Dogs vary, so a Heeler's own personality matters as much as the breed.
